Herbalism

“All men ought to be acquainted with

the medical art.” – Hippocrates

Knowledge of medicinal plants was once a common thing. People knew how to grow them and make medicine from them. Plants have been used by different cultures throughout the world for thousands of years.

Our culture has shifted a lot in more recent generations and as a result most of us are now at a loss with how to support our bodies naturally through herbs. Herbalism has become a lost art sadly. Apothecaries and still rooms are no longer very common and the pharmaceutical companies now dominate. For the most part herbalism is not a skill being passed down for generations anymore but we do have the power to change that in our homes.

It is especially beneficial for mothers to know about folk medicine so they have natural remedies at their fingertips when their families need them. When I was a new mom to a very colicky baby who had multiple allergies I took a course in herbalism. It helped me feel empowered in how to treat him naturally after western medicine failed us. Ten years later and I am still learning and using herbs daily in our home.

There is a lot of information you can find off of Pinterest when searching herbalism but if you want to know what’s in my personal library you can click here for inspiration. Reading Rosemary Gladstar’s book, Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health was what propelled me into using herbs with confidence over a decade ago. If you want a simple place to begin learning then start there.

And if you want to take your studies a step further then I highly recommend checking out Herbal Academy. I took their family herbalist course and am now studying their advanced clinical herbalism course. You can even try a free course by clicking below.

When you’re ready to get your feet wet and start experimenting with herbal skincare and wellness formulations I recommend grabbing your supplies from my favorite online source, Mountain Rose Herbs. They’ve been my number one place to go online for bulk organic DIY supplies and herbal education for almost twenty years now. And if you want to leave formulating with herbs to the experts until you become more comfortable they’ve got you covered too.

I celebrated St Patrick’s Day with an iced Match I celebrated St Patrick’s Day with an iced Matcha latte…just kidding I make one everyday! But it did feel a little bit more festive today. ☘️ Matcha is full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and an amino acid called L-theanine that helps to reduce anxiety. It also gives me an energy boost without the jitters!

Iced Matcha Latte
• 1 tsp Matcha green tea
• 1 cup milk of choice
• 1 cup ice
• 1-2 tsp honey
• sprinkle of cinnamon (personal preference)

Add Matcha to a small bowl and pour warm water over it. Whisk to remove clumps. Pour into a glass with milk and ice. Add honey and cinnamon. Enjoy and Happy St Paddy’s Day! 🌈
Lately I’ve been meditating on what art is and w Lately I’ve been meditating on what art is and what being an artist means. I’ve concluded that art is everywhere, from keeping a home, baking bread to working with plants. Artists aren’t just those who paint or write but those that make the world more beautiful in whatever capacity they can. Would you agree? #mondaymotivation
Flowers 🌸 in your salad just makes life better, Flowers 🌸 in your salad just makes life better, don’t you agree? This one has Chickweed, Dandelion petals and Redbud blossoms from the meadow. Sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil and vinegar. I’ve been loving @acidleague Strawberry Rose Living vinegar on my spring salads lately! 😋
Did you know that Maple seeds are edible? They are Did you know that Maple seeds are edible? They are rich in Omega 3,6 & 9, protein, vitamins and minerals. Just peel off the outer cover and you’ll find a little seed pod inside. The seeds can be bitter so either boil or roast them. I’ve heard that they’re good mixed into mashed potatoes! What wild edible food have you tried lately?
