ALONG THE MEADOW

A smoothie a day.

July 16, 2020 · In: recipes

One of my favorite ways to pack a lot of good nutrient dense foods into my kid’s bodies is through smoothies. We all have one every afternoon (myself included) to help tide us over until dinner and hit those nutritional goals for the day. There are so many different variations of smoothies that you all likely won’t get bored of them!

I’ll list below a couple of our favorite smoothie recipe and then some suggestions of different ingredients you can combine to come up with your own. Don’t be afraid to experiment and get creative. I’ve been able to disguise all kinds of nourishing ingredients without my kids ever knowing!

daily smoothie recipe

Servings 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 cup frozen berries wild blueberries + strawberries
  • 1/4 cup frozen mangos
  • 1 Tblsp local honey
  • 1 Tblsp ground flaxseeds
  • 1 Tblsp ground chia seeds
  • 1 cup oat milk

Now for the fun part, a list of ingredients for you to be inspired to create your own smoothie at home!

  • oat milk
  • coconut water
  • honey
  • ground flaxseeds
  • ground chia seeds
  • almond butter
  • cocoa powder
  • goji berries
  • collagen powder
  • Young Living’s multi greens
  • bananas
  • frozen berries
  • frozen mangos
  • frozen pineapple
  • kale
  • carrots
  • celery

A new favorite recipe has been 1/2 banana, honey, carrots, 1 celery stalk, mangos and pineapples with a scoop of collagen powder. If I have bananas going bad I chop them up in put them in the freezer but I usually use fresh bananas in our smoothies because so much of everything else in there is frozen. Try to have some fresh and some frozen ingredients in your smoothies. If you use all frozen your blender will have a hard time blending it well.

Avena sativa also known as Milky oats or Oatstraw Avena sativa also known as Milky oats or Oatstraw is one of the most impactful herbs that I’ve ever worked with. I started using it regularly during a time where my nervous system was severely unregulated. 😫

The results were nothing short of amazing! I was way less stressed, not as easily triggered, slept better and even felt physically better thanks to the vitamins and minerals. 🌿

Herbalist Michael Moore said that Oatstraw is an ideal herb for those with “crispy critter syndrome” referring to those people who are overworked, burnt out and constantly in fight or flight mode.

Beyond helping to regulate the nervous system Oatstraw has many other benefits for women including it’s ability to balance hormones (menopausal ladies, you need this one), increase milk production and helping with postpartum recovery. 💕

You can find Oatstraw in 3 of my tea blends…Happy, NORA and Nurse More. 🫖

NORA Pregnancy Tea 🤰 is a must-have if you’re NORA Pregnancy Tea 🤰 is a must-have if you’re expecting!

NORA is an acronym for Nettle • Oatstraw • Red raspberry • Alfalfa. I also add a touch of Spearmint to my blend!

🌿 Nettle – nourishing to the adrenals and high in vitamins, minerals and protein, helps to maintain blood sugar levels, use postpartum for milk supply

🌿 Oatstraw – similar properties to Nettle as a nerve and nutritive tonic

🌿 Red raspberry leaf – high in vitamins and minerals, toning to the uterus, historically used by Indigenous tribes

🌿 Alfalfa – one of the richest sources of vitamins including vitamin K, minerals and protein

🌿 Spearmint – a nervine and relaxant and a yummy edition to the typical NORA tea blend, helps to also keep nausea at bay

According to master herbalist Rachel Weaver, drinking this blend faithfully will help to shorten the duration and intensity of labor. 🙌

Have you heard of this blend before? It is restocked in the apothecary shop. Just head to the link in bio! 🫖
