We all want beautiful thick hair and using Rosemary water is one way that we can help with hair growth naturally!

Rosemary water for hair growth.

Does Rosemary water work for hair growth?

While Rosemary is one of my all time favorite herbs to grow and cook with using it for haircare is new for me. If you’re on social media you’ve likely seen this herbal hair remedy trending lately. I don’t like to jump on every bandwagon but science does seem to back up people’s claims that Rosemary can help with hair growth. According to this study done in people with alopecia Rosemary is just as effective for hair growth as the synthetic drug minoxidil. Another interesting finding in this study was that minoxidil caused irritation of the scalp along with other not so pleasant side effects while Rosemary did not. Herbs for the win!

Why is Rosemary good for hair growth?

Here is the big benefit. Like the synthetic drug minoxidil Rosemary is a vasodilator, meaning that it can help to open up your blood vessels. This opening increases blood flow to the scalp and around the hair follicles. Hair follicles are then stimulated to move into the growth phase.

How to make Rosemary water for hair growth.

If you can make a cup of tea then you can definitely make this recipe! Everything you need is listed below…

  • 2 Tblsp dried Rosemary or 4 Tblsp fresh Rosemary
  • 2 cups of distilled water
  • mason jar with lid
  • cheesecloth or sprouting lid
  • glass spray bottle
  • small funnel

Now for the fun part! Simply place the Rosemary either dried or fresh into a mason jar. Boil 2 cups of water like you are making tea. Pour the boiling water into the mason jar over the Rosemary (Side note: a little trick you can do is to place a metal spoon into the mason jar to prevent the glass from cracking when you pour the hot water in. Just make sure you remove the spoon after filling with water. I learned this trick from Juliet Blankespoor of Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine.) Cap the jar and set on the counter for 4-8 hours to make a potent infusion. When it is time to decant your hair growth remedy secure cheesecloth or sprouting lid to the jar and pour into a glass spray bottle with the help of a funnel! Store the finished product in the refrigerator and use within 4-6 weeks.

When to use

Consistency is key with most anything including this herbal remedy. Because we are using water there won’t be any greasiness or reason why you can’t spray into onto your scalp twice a day. The study mentioned above did not improvement at the six month mark so aim for using the Rosemary infused water twice a day for a minimum of six months.

Last summer when Appalachian herbalist and forager Last summer when Appalachian herbalist and forager, Darryl Patton taught me that you can create immunity to poison ivy’s urushiol by ingesting it I was floored. 😳 The man plucked a leaf off the vine and swallowed it right there in front of me (he’s been doing this a long time folks, don’t try it this way at first). After the shock wore off I realized it made perfect sense! It’s simply a form of inoculation and like treating like. 🌿

Darryl Patton was taught by his mentor Tommie Bass that if you take 1-3 small leaves about the size of a mouse’s ear (the smaller the leaf the less urushiol) and fold them up in bread eat them every couple of days for two weeks you’ll be immune to Poison Ivy. It worked for him and lots of others who have also tried it. Eventually he became so immune that he could pluck off the leaves straight from the vine and eat them!

Thankfully I have never had a reaction to Poison Ivy that I can remember so I have yet to try this but I am completely fascinated by the concept and believe it to work. Have you heard of this way to gain immunity against Poison Ivy or tried it?

Another option would be to use the homeopathic remedy Rhus toxicodendron prophylactically. Homeopath Joette Calabrese recommends administering four doses of Rhus tox 30 in one day at the onset of the season and then repeating this one day per week for one month to minimize the intensity of the exposure.
